Lekha Sri is a bright and cheerful 10-year-old girl from Thiruvallur district. She loves going to school and is currently studying in Class VII at her local Government school. Her laughter and curiosity light up every room she walks into — but behind that smile is a struggle no child should have to face.

When Lekha Sri was just 8 months old, her family’s world turned upside down when she was diagnosed with tuberculosis. After months of treatment at several government hospitals, she bravely fought her way back to health. But her journey didn’t end there.

About a year ago, Lekha Sri began experiencing chest pain and stopped gaining weight like other children her age. Worried, her mother, Ms. Devaki, took her to a private hospital. After several tests, doctors discovered that she had a hole in her heart. They hoped medication would help, but her health didn’t improve.

During a routine health check-up at school, doctors once again raised concerns about her condition. This time, she was referred to a free cardiac camp organized by MIOT Hospitals. Further evaluation confirmed that Lekha Sri has Secundum Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) — a moderate-sized hole in her heart, with possible additional small fenestrations. Her right heart chambers (RA/RV) are already dilated, and doctors have recommended an urgent ASD device closure procedure to prevent irreversible damage.

The cost of this life-saving procedure is Rs. 2,00,000/-.

For Lekha Sri’s mother, this is a devastating blow. Ms. Devaki lost her husband four years ago and has been raising her two daughters alone. She works as a daily wage laborer at construction sites, earning barely Rs. 450 a day — just enough to keep food on the table. Paying for this surgery is simply impossible for her.
